Dancing Among the Stars

Dondi has enough of a reputation to be hired to dance for Omar Sharif, Jimmy Buffet and Peter Fonda. She gets contracts to dance, usually for a month at a time, at resorts in the cradle of the craft, the Middle East. She’s also danced in Europe, Mexico, Australia, and Polynesia. Next spring, she’s heading to Morocco.

To be good enough to perform around the globe, Dondi has had to learn steps and body moves with names like the Ribcage Slide and the Belly Flutter. She has had to learn about Arabic music, to absorb its improvisational complexities and rhythms. She has taken classes to understand various customs and dance dialects. In some places, for example, she must keep her distance from the audience. In others, she can get close. All of this has taken years of practice and study to learn and her education is ongoing. Now, talking about it she sounds almost surprised by the journey.
