Philosophy
of the Dance
Im
more critical in my journey now, of others and myself. I feel angry when I see women who
perform blatantly sexual moves and use seduction throughout their performances. This
isnt only with new, young, cute belly dancers (which seem to get a bad reputation)
but older women who feel they are losing their place in clubs and performance venues. I
constantly "watch" myself so I dont cross the line into
"raunchy". The dance is sensual enough
some of the techniques we learn are
incredibly sexy.

No woman has to
force this sexiness with extra pumping, grinding or even lip-licking moves that I see so
frequently. No woman should ever try to seduce the men in the audience
that is
problematic in so many ways. The dance is plenty seductive without that type of ignorant
behavior. Audience participation can be fun and comical but should not make a mockery of
our dance. This is a dance that cries out to be legitimized and respected through women
(and men) performing genuine technique. |
