Listening
with a New Ear
I returned to the United States vowing
to immerse myself in studies of Egyptian and modern Lebanese technique. I purchased many video
tapes of Dani Boutros, Hwayda Hashim, Amani and Samara. I
took classes with Sahra and Angelika Nemeth and workshops with Yousrey
Sharif and Shareen El Safy.
I listened to Arabic music with a new
ear, always remembering what the dancer Liza LaZiza told me in Dubai, "To be a
good oriental dancer you can't just love the dance, you must love the music."
